Frequently asked questions
Is UPI taxable in India?
UPI itself is not taxed. It is a payment method; tax follows the nature and source of the money. See the full UPI tax guide at /upi-tax.
Is there tax on UPI transactions?
There is no separate tax on a UPI transaction as such. Any tax arises from the underlying transaction.
Is there a UPI tax above ₹50,000?
No. Crossing ₹50,000 does not create an income-tax charge. See /tax-on-upi-transaction-above-50000.
Is there tax on UPI transactions above ₹1 lakh?
No automatic tax. Treatment depends on whether the receipt is income, a loan, a gift or your own money. See /tax-on-upi-transaction-above-1-lakh.
Is UPI taxable above ₹2 lakh?
Not because of the amount. Larger receipts simply need clearer documentation.
Is receiving money through UPI taxable?
Only if the receipt is income. See /upi-money-received-tax.
Is salary received through UPI taxable?
Yes, as salary. The payment channel is irrelevant. See /salary-received-via-upi.
Is business income received through UPI taxable?
Yes — UPI collections form part of turnover. See /business-payment-upi.
Is freelance income through UPI taxable?
Yes, as professional or business income. See /freelance-payment-upi.
Is a gift received through UPI taxable?
Gift provisions may apply depending on relationship, occasion and exemptions. See /gift-tax-upi.
Is a loan received through UPI taxable?
A genuine documented loan is a liability, not income. See /loan-received-via-upi.
Is a UPI transfer between my own accounts taxable?
No. See /upi-transfer-between-own-accounts.
Does UPI attract GST?
No. GST depends on a taxable supply by a liable supplier. See /gst-on-upi-payments.
Does UPI attract TDS?
No. TDS depends on the specified payment involved. See /tds-on-upi-payments.
What is UPI MDR?
Merchant discount rate — the charge in the payment ecosystem for accepting a merchant payment. See /upi-mdr.
Is UPI MDR a tax?
No. It is a commercial payment charge, not a government levy.
What are UPI charges in 2026?
P2P transfers remain free and merchant payments up to ₹2,000 remain free; specified merchant transactions above ₹2,000 can attract MDR once NPCI notifies the post-Diwali start date (originally 15 October 2026). See /upi-charges.
