Quick answer

Salary is taxable as salary income whether it arrives by UPI, NEFT or cheque. The payment method changes nothing about the tax treatment.

UPI tax in India 2026 →

What stays the same

  • Salary is taxable under the applicable rules for the year.
  • The employer's obligation to deduct tax at source on salary is unchanged by the payment channel.
  • Your payslip, not the UPI reference, is the primary record of the salary components.

What to watch when an employer pays by UPI

  • Ask for a payslip each month — a UPI credit alone does not show the breakdown or the tax deducted.
  • Check that the amount credited matches net salary after deductions.
  • If the payment comes from an individual's personal UPI ID, keep the appointment letter and payslips; the receipt should still be explainable as salary.
  • Reconcile deducted tax against your annual tax statement.
